League News - January 9th, 2010

Happy New Year! We are now half way through the season!

There has been some confusion surrounding what qualifies as a 'first shot'. To clarify, to earn a 'first shot', the player must win the game within a single inning (inning = one visit to the table). If a player breaks and does not sink anything, they are no longer eligible to earn an 'F' (or 'E' for that matter). I hope that clears things up!

If you were not able to play your scheduled match during this winter's 'snow week' please arrange a make up match with your opposing team as soon as you can. If you need contact information for the opposing team's captain, please get in touch with us at operators@midisland8ball.org

E/F/N

No, EFN is not an acronym for how often you eat pizza. Rather, this system of recording 'special' games was adopted (as well as this point system) from the BCA leagues that are prevelant on this continent.

There has been some confustion as to how this works. Although the terminology is somewhat non-descriptive it is a standard in the amatuer billiards world so we should all know what it means and how it works. In any given game for a specific player, there is an opportunity for a 'special' (their word, not mine). When this happens, the appropriate letter is placed in the circle on the score sheet. A game can only be one kind of special game. The letter codes, names, and descriptions of the specials are as follows:

    Letter code Name Description
    E ERO (Eight-Ball Run Out

There are two, and only two instances where an ERO can occur.

    1. The breaking players makes a ball on the break and then proceeds to (legally, obviously) run out the table, winning the game thereby quashing any opportunity for his opponent to approach the table.
    2. The breaking player BREAKS DRY leaving ALL 15 BALLS (plus Cue-Ball) and AN OPEN TABLE for his opponent. The opposing player then proceeds to run out the table in a single inning and wins the game, there by earning the ERO.

When a player scores an ERO, the other player automatically gets a 'N'. See below

F First Attempt or First Shot The First Attempt is similiar, but not identical to the ERO. The First Attempt is scored anytime a player steps up to the table and proceeds to run out all of his or her balls, including the 8-ball, during his or her first attempt at the table in a single inning thereby winning the game and there were NOT 15 balls (plus Cue-ball) on the table when he started. Note: The breaking player is not eligible to earn a 'First Attempt'

N No Shot After the Break This one is fairly easy. A player is awarded an N anytime they are not afforded the opportunity to shoot in the game following the opening break shot. Every ERO has a corresponding N (No Shot). You don't shoot - you get an N. Note, 'N's are not restricted to losers. A 'N' can also be awarded to a player when his opponent loses the game (by scratching on the eight, e.g.) before the player shoots.
